KARACHI: A man was shot dead and a passer-by wounded in an armed attack on a van in the Manghopir area on Tuesday, police said.
They identified the deceased as Shaukat Ali, 45, and the wounded as Mohammed Arif, 40. The incident took place near Hamdard University.
Police rushed to the scene after receiving information about the incident, secured the area and collected evidence.
West SSP Tariq Illahi Mastoi said the deceased was transporting fertiliser in a van when the armed assailants travelling in an Alto car intercepted him at around 10:50am. The attackers opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Ali sustained critical gunshot wounds and died, while Arif, who was passing by at the time, was also wounded in the firing.
The officer said the attack appeared to be motivated by personal enmity, though he did not disclose further details.
The dead and the wounded were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Suspect gunned down in Korangi ‘encounter’
A suspected robber was gunned down in an alleged encounter in Korangi early Tuesday morning, police said.
The Awami Colony police said they instructed pillion riders to stop on the main road near Taj Gabol Goth. However, the suspects resorted to firing. In an ensuing exchange of gunfire, one armed man, namely Sameer Riaz, was killed. One pistol, one motorcycle and one cell phone were recovered from his custody.
The police claimed that the killed suspect had a past criminal record as there were 14 FIRs registered against him at different police stations in the metropolis. The body was shifted to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities.
