Innocence betrayed

In what is reminiscent of a bygone era, where archaic customs clash with modern sensibilities, the recent detention of individuals involved in orchestrating the marriage between a 13-year-old girl and a 70-year-old man has ignited frustration among netizens. This distressing revelation should not only rattle our moral compass but also propel us into a collective reckoning with the insidious practice of child marriage — a blight that continues to stain the fabric of our society. The involvement of the girl’s father in arranging the marriage is deeply troubling. Parents are expected to act in the best interests of their children, protecting them from harm and ensuring their well-being. However, in this case, the father’s alleged role in facilitating the marriage, coupled with reports of a substantial financial transaction between him and the groom, suggests a betrayal of parental responsibility and a prioritisation of financial gain over the welfare of his daughter. It also illustrates the commodification of young girls and the exploitation of their vulnerability for financial gain. While the arrests made are a step in the right direction, they must be accompanied by reformative efforts to address the root of the rut. This includes strengthening legal frameworks and providing support services for victims. Furthermore, efforts to end child marriage must be grounded in a commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. By ensuring that girls have access to education, healthcare and opportunities for economic independence, we can empower them to make informed choices about their lives and futures. The viral video depicting the young girl’s confusion and lack of understanding about marriage serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of education and awareness-raising in combating child marriage.
