Mexico to deploy 10,000 troops to US border in exchange for one-month tariff delay

In a significant development on Monday, Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the US-Mexico border in exchange for a one-month delay on the tariffs threatened by President Donald Trump. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the agreement on social media, announcing the deal just hours before the tariffs were set to take effect. The agreement follows a phone call between Sheinbaum and Trump, during which both leaders discussed measures to curb drug trafficking into the US and address the flow of firearms into Mexico. In return, Mexico will significantly bolster security along the border. Trump hailed the phone call as a "very friendly conversation" and confirmed the deal in a post on Truth Social, stating that the Mexican troops will focus on halting the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into the United States. Furthermore, both sides are beginning talks on broader trade and security issues. Trump also outlined plans for ongoing negotiations led by key US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, alongside high-level Mexican representatives. This deal comes shortly after Trump announced 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, along with a 10% tariff on China. While Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke earlier, no agreement was reached between the US and Canada. Trudeau, in a pointed response to the tariffs, urged Canadians to "buy Canada" and support local products.
