President Asif Ali Zardari met with his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping, at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People to discuss enhancing bilateral relations, expediting China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, and bolstering security for Chinese nationals in Pakistan. Asif Zardari, who arrived in China on Tuesday for a four-day visit, acknowledged attempts to disrupt bilateral ties through attacks on “Chinese brothers” but insisted that Pakistan remained committed to safeguarding their friendship. President Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan's unbreakable friendship with China, vowing that extremist attacks targeting Chinese nationals would not undermine their long-standing ties. “Pakistan and China will always be friends, all-weather friends,” Zardari said at the start of talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. “No matter how many terrors, how many issues crop up in the world, I will stand, Pakistan people will stand with the people of China.” Thousands of Chinese workers are involved in infrastructure projects in Pakistan under China’s multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which aims to expand trade routes and deepen Beijing’s global influence. However, Chinese workers have been targeted in multiple attacks in recent years, including seven killed in two incidents last year, raising fresh concerns in China over security risks. Xi praised the enduring relationship between the two nations, citing advancements in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and cooperation across various sectors as a model for international partnerships. “The Chinese side is willing to work with the Pakistani side to move forward hand-in-hand on our respective paths of modernization,” Xi said. Last month, a $230 million Chinese-funded airport—the largest in Pakistan—became operational in Gwadar, a key coastal city in Baluchistan province where separatist militants have targeted Chinese workers and investments. The Gwadar shipping port is the envisioned terminus of CPEC, linking western China’s Xinjiang region with the Arabian Sea. During his visit, Asif Zardari will also travel to Harbin to attend the opening ceremony of the 9th Asian Winter Games, underscoring the broadening scope of Pakistan-China cooperation.
