Rejuvenated security focus

At a time when the armed forces are engaged in an existential fight with a faceless enemy, the resolve on the part of Army Chief Gen Asim Munir to hunt down 'frenemies' is on the spot. Surely, he is aware of the abettors who work hand in glove with external elements to keep Pakistan on the edges, and taking them out is the sine qua non for security and stability. The 267th Corps Commanders' Conference at the GHQ in Rawalpindi, under the army chief, took a leap forward as it agreed to address the urgency of countering externally-driven narratives of exclusion by wholeheartedly working with the locals for accelerating people-centric socio-economic development in the underdeveloped regions of restive Balochistan and elsewhere. Such a perspective is leadership, indeed, and invites forces from across the board in civil society and politics to join hands for the solidarity of the country, and to secure it from terror fissures. The double-down in approach to checkmate the enemy has come just days after 18 soldiers were killed in counter-terrorism operations in Kalat and Harnai, pointing a finger at revulsion from across the friendly borders of Iran and Afghanistan. The military's contention to focus on security measures with the pinnacle of commanders in session by making no mention of other issues that are usually referred to such as social media and political instability is a sign of professional commitment, and is laudable. Pakistan is experiencing a spike in terrorism and it saddens to register that nearly seven lives are lost on a daily basis. In the year 2024, at least 685 law enforcers were martyred in as many as 444 attacks, making it a deadliest year for civil and military personnel in a decade. A glance at the terror spectrum unveils an unholy alliance between the TTP and Baloch militants, pushing the security forces in an environment of volatility, deception and daredevil attacks. Thus, the focus should be on securitising the state and that too without any deviation. Politics, economy and foreign relations can wait for a while, as the thrust should be on exterminating the terror nexus.
