Johnny Depp’s lawyer, Benjamin Chew, who represented him in the defamation case against Amber Heard, has shared his thoughts on the legal battle surrounding It Ends With Us. Chew described Justin Baldoni’s legal strategy as "very aggressive" after the Jane the Virgin actor launched a website containing his amended complaint and a "timeline of relevant events" in an effort to counter Blake Lively’s sexual harassment allegations. "I think it is very aggressive," Chew commented during an appearance on Law&Crime Sidebar with Jesse Weber on Tuesday. "Usually you would not do something like that before a hearing, but I’m sure that they vetted it carefully, vetted the material carefully." He further explained, "Certainly posting a pleading doesn’t seem to me to be out of bounds. These are pleadings made in the public record." "… But it’s a novel approach, a bold approach." Baldoni, who acted in and directed It Ends With Us, launched the website last week amid his ongoing legal dispute with Lively. When asked which party had the upper hand in the case, Chew refrained from choosing sides. "I’m going to remain agnostic as to who has the edge right now," he said regarding the high-stakes lawsuit. However, he stressed the importance of having concrete evidence, stating it can be "particularly persuasive … because everybody can see it." Chew also pointed out that video footage and text messages can be "more impactful" than just "assertions of counsel." Baldoni, 41, sparked headlines last month when he released raw footage from the It Ends With Us set, showing himself and Lively, 37, filming a scene of their characters "falling in love." Despite Baldoni’s attempt to challenge her claims with the video, Lively’s legal team argued the footage was actually "damning" against him. The trial between Baldoni and Lively has been scheduled for March 2026. Meanwhile, Depp’s connection to the It Ends With Us lawsuit emerged when it was revealed that Baldoni had enlisted the crisis PR firm The Agency Group, led by Melissa Nathan, which previously represented Depp during his case against Heard.
