Officials from the US diplomatic mission in the metropolis on Thursday visited the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) to get updates on the health of an American woman receiving treatment for mental and physical issues. The 35-year-old American woman, Onija Andrew Robbins, who travelled to the metropolis driven by her love for a Pakistani teenager, has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder apart from other health issues. Robbins, mother of two, has been given a 15-day extension after her three months visit visa expired, while Nidal Ahmed Memon, for whom she has fallen, and his family have been hiding since the American woman caught the media's attention in Karachi. On Thursday, diplomats from the US Consulate General in Karachi visited Robbins in the Special Ward of JPMC where they were briefed for an hour by Medical Board Chairman Prof Chooni Lal, along with Joint Executive Director Dr Salman and Dr Yahya, Dr Nausheen, Dr Anam, and Dr Zeeshan, regarding the patient's condition. According to Prof Lal, Robbins' health had improved since her admission in JPMC. Upon arrival at the hospital, medical tests revealed that her hemoglobin level was critically low at just 4. Three packs of blood were administered, raising her hemoglobin level to 9. The patient is being continuously monitored for her physical and mental health, with medications prescribed to manage her bipolar disorder. JPMC spokesperson Jahangir Durrani stated that the consulate staff received a detailed briefing on the medications administered and the tests conducted so far. Other medical complications affecting the patient have also shown signs of improvement. According to hospital officials, Robbins' visa is set to expire on February 11. She is expected to be discharged before this date, pending final fitness approval from the Medical Board.
