Karachi University restores BS programs in public colleges after years

In a significant move, the University of Karachi has reinstated four-year BS degree programs in public colleges after several years. The decision follows the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) ban on two-year graduation programs, which had halted bachelor’s degree offerings in government institutions. According to Express News, the University of Karachi has granted affiliation to seven government colleges, allowing them to offer BS programs in various disciplines, including Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, Business Administration (BBA), Economics and Finance, Health & Physical Education, and Sports Science. The colleges approved for the BS programs include: DJ Science College Government College of Physical Education Karachi PECHS Girls College Government College of Commerce & Economics Government Degree Science & Commerce College, FB Area Block 16 Pakistan Shipowners College The university received applications from 10 government colleges, out of which seven met the required standards and were granted affiliation, confirmed Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi. University defends decision amid faculty protests Addressing recent faculty protests, the Vice Chancellor refuted claims that academic activities were completely disrupted due to the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) and teachers' union boycotts. He asserted that during this period, Karachi University continued its academic council and syndicate meetings, made key educational decisions, and conducted exams for MBBS, BDS, associate degrees, and evening programs. Furthermore, Dr Iraqi revealed that disciplinary action was taken against long-term absentee faculty members, resulting in the termination of at least four professors from the Physics, Social Work, and Biochemistry departments.
