Rizwan reflects on missed opportunities, areas for improvement after India loss

Pakistan's captain, Mohammad Rizwan, expressed disappointment and attributed the team's 81-run defeat to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 to poor shot selection. Batting first, Pakistan managed to post 241 runs, with Rizwan contributing 46 runs. Despite a solid partnership with Saud Shakeel, who top-scored with 62 runs, Rizwan acknowledged missed opportunities and poor shot selection as key factors in their defeat. "We won the toss, but didn't get the benefit," Rizwan said in the post-match conference. "We wanted to get 280, but their bowlers did really well in the middle overs." He further noted, "When Saud and I were batting, we wanted to go deep. But our shot selection was bad, and we lost wickets, which is why we were kept to 240." Rizwan also highlighted concerns over his team's fielding, stating, "We must improve our fielding. We made a lot of mistakes in this match, they've repeated, and we hope to work on them going forward." India's captain, Rohit Sharma on the other hand, praised his team's all-round performance. "We started superbly with the ball," Sharma remarked. "We knew the wicket could get slower, but we backed our experienced batters to go out there and get 240." He commended the efforts of his spinners, saying, "Credit goes to Kuldeep, Axar, Jadeja – all of whom have played a lot." Sharma also emphasized the contributions of his pacers, noting, "Not to forget how Shami, Hardik, Harshit bowled as well. It was a good performance from the entire unit." Regarding Virat Kohli's performance, Sharma said, "Virat loves representing the country, doing what he does best, which is what he did today. People sitting inside the dressing room aren't surprised with what he did." Kohli's unbeaten century (100*) was pivotal in India's successful chase, earning him the Player of the Match award. The defeat leaves Pakistan facing an uphill battle in the tournament, while India's victory boosts their chances of advancing to the next stage. This win marks India's second consecutive victory in the tournament, enhancing their position at the top of Group A with a net run rate of +0.647. The result virtually assures their progression to the semi-finals.
