Fake medicines flood Sindh

Sindh Drug Testing Laboratory Director Adnan Rizvi has said that during the last two months, more than 300 samples of different medicines have been tested, out of which 13 have been found fake. These fake medicines were being sold illegally in the market under the names of original companies. During the investigation, it was also found that different companies whose names are used to sell fake medicines in the market actually do not exist. Talking to The Express Tribune, Adnan Rizvi said that during the investigation, it has been revealed that fake medicines are being sold in the market under the names of seven pharma companies. He said that the Sindh Drug Testing Laboratory had received complaints of fake medicines in Karachi and in the interior of Sindh. Drug inspectors collected various drug samples and sent for lab test. Giving an examples, Rizvi mentioned, an ointment, being sold in the open market by the name Iodex, which is used for body aches, and muscle pain, was tested. It was found that it did not contain ingredients that are used to cure pain. The drug inspectors were directed to contact the companies on the addresses mentioned on the packing but startling it was found that such companies do not exist. Rizvi said that when contacted the company that manufactured Iodex, the officials informed that they have stopped manufacturing Iodex in 2017. Similarly, the batch number, line number and company addresses listed on 13 other different drugs were also found wrong. After this, all drug inspectors have been directed to crack down on fake medicines.
