Kia Norway has made waves with a bold Instagram ad mocking Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The now-deleted post features an image of the Kia EV3 sporting a bumper sticker that reads, “I bought this after Elon went crazy,” sparking widespread attention online. Photo: Reddit The sticker is a parody of a phrase some Tesla owners have used — “I bought this before Elon went crazy” — intended to distance themselves from Musk’s increasingly controversial public image. Photo: Reddit Musk came under intense global scrutiny after performing a Nazi salute during Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025 in Washington, DC. Photo: NYT His participation in the event, as well as his appointment as the head of Trump’s newly formed “Department of Government Efficiency” — dubbed “DOGE” after the Dogecoin cryptocurrency — further amplified public backlash. Reports suggest the scandal is affecting Tesla’s performance globally. According to CarScoops, Tesla sales in Germany dropped by 59.5 per cent in January 2025 and by a staggering 76.3 per cent in February. In Australia, sales plummeted 65.5 per cent during the same period. In China, January sales fell by 49.16 per cent, marking a steep decline in market share. Tesla’s stock has also suffered, dropping over 30 per cent since the start of the year. Kia’s bold marketing move capitalises on Tesla’s image crisis, positioning the EV3 as a fresh alternative for disillusioned buyers.
