President Asif Ali Zardari is addressing the joint session of parliament on Monday, marking the beginning of the second parliamentary year of the current National Assembly. As soon as the president has begun his speech, opposition lawmakers, particularly from PTI, have erupted in slogans and have carried placards, turning the session into a chaotic spectacle. The president has resorted to using headphones to continue his speech amid the disruptions. Senior government officials, including ministers and lawmakers from various parties, have attended the session, while foreign diplomats have observed from the guest gallery. The session’s sole agenda has been the president’s address, with no other proceedings scheduled. Before the session, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has held a meeting with President Zardari, joined by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. In a light moment, PTI leader Pervez Khattak has mistakenly walked toward opposition benches before realising his error and returning to shake hands with the prime minister and deputy prime minister. Despite the protests, President Zardari has smiled at opposition members while continuing his address, showing no signs of being deterred by the uproar.
