King Charles hospitalized due to cancer treatment side-effects, engagements postponed

King Charles III was briefly hospitalized on Thursday for observation after experiencing temporary side-effects from his cancer treatment, Buckingham Palace confirmed. The 76-year-old monarch underwent scheduled treatment that morning at the London Clinic — the same hospital where he was treated for an enlarged prostate in January 2024. He has since returned to Clarence House and is said to be in good spirits, reviewing state papers and making calls from his study. Acting on medical advice, the King postponed his engagements for both Thursday and Friday as a precaution. The King had been scheduled to meet with ambassadors on Thursday and attend four public events in Birmingham the following day. All were postponed. “His Majesty offers his deepest apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed,” a palace spokesperson said, adding that he hopes to reschedule the engagements in due course. Palace sources described the hospital visit as minor and emphasized that such side-effects are common with ongoing treatment. Specifics were not disclosed, and no further updates on his condition are expected unless necessary. Charles was diagnosed with a form of cancer in February 2024 after doctors identified an unrelated issue during treatment for a benign prostate condition. He resumed public-facing duties in April of that year while continuing weekly treatment. Despite the brief disruption, the King is still expected to proceed with a planned state visit to Italy in 10 days. During the visit, he is set to become the first British monarch to address both houses of the Italian Parliament. His schedule continues to be managed in close consultation with his medical team to support his recovery while allowing him to fulfill official duties.
