Karachi: Blaze near oil refinery remains uncontrolled after 30 hours

An underground fire triggered by a suspected methane leak in Karachi’s Korangi Crossing area has continued to rage for over 31 hours, with officials warning it may take up to 10 days to extinguish. The fire erupted early Saturday when a construction firm drilled beyond 1,100 feet for a tube well, releasing gas believed to be biogenic in origin. Despite continuous firefighting efforts using water, soil and sand, the flames remain uncontained. Chief Fire Officer Humayun Ahmed said methane gas was escaping under high pressure, adding that extinguishing the fire prematurely could spread the gas and endanger nearby residents. “The blaze can only be controlled once gas pressure decreases,” Ahmed said, estimating that could take several days. A former managing director of Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) suggested the fire may burn for up to 10 days. PPL’s Chief Operating Officer Sikandar Memon added that while the gas was not immediately dangerous, its exact composition and source remained unknown. Water samples are being collected to assist the investigation, and the Sui Southern Gas Company confirmed it has no infrastructure near the site. Former Karachi fire chief Kazim Ali Khan advised against extinguishing the fire directly, suggesting it be left to burn out naturally. He warned the released gas could contain hydrogen sulfide, a highly toxic compound. To prevent the fire from spreading, Kazim Ali Khan proposed building earthen barriers 90 metres from the site. Firefighters initially used water to control the flames, but the approach intensified the blaze. Authorities later switched to sand and soil, but high gas pressure continues to fuel the fire. Over 10 fire tenders and multiple water tankers remain on-site, as officials face growing difficulty in managing the situation.
