Upcoming Bollywood film Abir Gulaal, starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Indian actor Vaani Kapoor, has encountered significant opposition in Maharashtra, reported Pinkvilla. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, has firmly objected to the film's release in the state due to Khan's Pakistani nationality. MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar squarely stated, "We only learned about this film's release today when the makers announced it. But we are making it clear that we will not allow this film to release in Maharashtra because it features a Pakistani actor. Under no circumstances will we permit such films to be released in the state." Echoing similar sentiments, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam emphasised the prevailing anti-Pakistan sentiment in India. He remarked, "There is widespread hatred for Pakistan in India. When a film from Pakistan is released, Indian audiences do not prefer watching it. Even if a few people watch it out of curiosity, Pakistani artists have never been able to gain widespread success in India." Abir Gulaal, directed by Aarti S Bagdi, was filmed over a 40-day schedule in and around London and is slated for release on May 9. After Uri attack The controversy arose shortly after the release of the film's teaser, which features a romantic scene between Khan and Kapoor set in a car on a rainy London evening. The minute-long teaser features the duo sharing a tender moment, with Khan humming the classic song Kuch Na Kaho from 1942: A Love Story. Kapoor's character playfully asks, "Are you flirting with me?" to which Khan responds, "Do you want me to?" The teaser has garnered positive reactions from fans and critics alike. Koimoi praised Khan's performance, noting that he "kills you with that gaze" and "steal[s] your heartbeats, one musical note at a time." The Hindustan Times highlighted the chemistry between the lead actors, stating that the teaser "has fans abuzz with excitement to see Fawad back in a romantic comedy." "This heartwarming tale unfolds in the picturesque streets of London, weaving a love story filled with unexpected turns, tender moments, and pure magic. Audiences can expect a delightful blend of laughter, tender moments, and the undeniable chemistry between Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor," the synopsis says. This development underscores the ongoing complexities and sensitivities surrounding cross-border artistic collaborations between India and Pakistan. The involvement of Pakistani artists in Indian cinema has been a contentious issue, especially following political tensions between the two nations. In 2016, after the Uri attackan assault on an Indian army base in Kashmir that India blamed on Pakistanbilateral relations deteriorated sharply. In the aftermath, political groups in India, particularly the MNS, demanded a ban on Pakistani artists working in Bollywood. The MNS' film workers' association issued a 48-hour ultimatum for all Pakistani artists to leave India, warning that they would be forcibly removed if they did not comply. This led to an industry-wide ban on Pakistani actors. "We gave a 48-hour deadline to Pakistani actors and artists to leave India, or MNS will push them out," stated Amey Khopkar of the MNS Chitrapat Sena. Khan was among the Pakistani actors present in India at the time. At the time, some Bollywood stars, like Anupam Kher, felt that Pakistani actors should condemn the Uri attack. Others, like Karan Johar, who had previously worked with Khan, questioned the effectiveness of the ban and argued that it was not the solution to the issue. However, some, like Salman Khan, defended Pakistani artists, stating that they are artists and not terrorists. Later, in 2023, the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition to ban Indian filmmakers from working with Pakistani artists in 2023, effectively allowing artists like Mahira Khan to work in Indian films and web series again.
