The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Thursday arrested Harpreet Singh, an Indian national wanted by authorities in India for his alleged role in a 2023 grenade attack in Chandigarh. Singh is also accused of supporting the Sikh separatist group Babbar Khalsa International. The FBI confirmed on Thursday that it had taken Harpreet Singh into custody in Sacramento, California. Singh, who had entered the United States illegally, was allegedly evading arrest by using encrypted applications and disposable phones. In a post shared on X, FBI Sacramento mentioned, “Today, Harpreet Singh, an alleged terrorist responsible for terror attacks in Punjab, India, was arrested by the FBI and ERO in Sacramento. Linked to two international terrorist groups, he entered the US illegally and used burner phones to evade capture.” According to the FBI, he used burner phones to evade capture. Indian authorities have alleged Singh is a key figure in Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), that New Delhi designates as terrorist organisation over involvement in promoting separatism. He is accused of supplying funds, weapons, and logistical support to BKI operatives inside India. India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) had earlier announced a cash reward for information leading to Singh’s capture. India's NIA alleges that Singh played a central role in organising a grenade attack on a retired police officer in Chandigarh in September 2023. Investigators say he operated from abroad, providing resources to carry out the attack. The arrest is part of wider US-India cooperation aimed at disrupting transnational terrorism networks. In recent years, India has issued arrest warrants for several individuals based in the United States with suspected ties to extremist movements, including Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, whose reported assassination plot led to criminal charges in a New York court. Singh is currently in federal custody as US authorities coordinate with Indian officials to determine the next legal steps.
