Traders protest rent hike in Cantt area

Abbottabad Cantonment Board has increased the rents of the shops allotted within its limits by 50% and issued notices to the shopkeepers. There is a stir among the traders who termed it illegal, saying the increase in rents was not acceptable under any circumstances. The Board has increased the rents of more than 600 shopkeepers given at a premium within its limits from 25% to 50% after every three years. While at the same time, the annual 10% law was trampled underfoot. At present, the Board has given more than 600 shops at a premium in the Cantonment Plaza, Cantonment Bazaar, Supply, Narian and Karimpura areas within the Cantonment Board limits. And these shops have been given in different periods. According to the Cantonment Act 1963, the Cantonment Executive Officer is the Rent Controller and has the authority to increase by 10 percent annually or 25 percent after three years. But the Cantonment Executive Officer, without consulting the traders, issued notices to the traders after three years by increasing the rates by 50%, in response to which more than 100 traders of Cantt sent their replies of the notices to the Board through their lawyers.
