KP House committee dissatisfied over police report on Radio Pakistan attack

PESHAWAR: A committee of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Monday expressed displeasure over a police report about investigation into the cases related to a 2023 attack on the Radio Pakistan building here.

The Radio Pakistan building was ransacked and torched by a mob on May 10, 2023, during protests that followed the arrest of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan. The attackers destroyed equipment, historical recordings and three vehicles, while an employee was hospitalised with burns.

On Monday, the committee members reminded the police that a comprehensive proforma had been provided to the police department.

They said that the department was asked to submit a step-by-step investigation record, complete details of nominated and subsequently added accused, available evidence against them, sources of evidence, status of investigations prior to the submission of challans (charge sheets), utilisation of available resources, current legal status of the cases, details of acquitted, convicted and under-trial accused, CCTV footage and other evidence.

The department produced a report on the matter. However, the committee chairman and law minister, Aftab Alam Afridi, expressed dissatisfaction with it and directed the relevant officials to file the report according to the prescribed proforma to ensure that comprehensive, accurate and verifiable information is provided to the committee.

He said that it was a matter of public importance, so transparency, accountability and professional standards must be ensured at all costs.

The chairman directed the police department to produce a complete, detailed and authentic report in the next meeting to enable the committee to make recommendations.

The committee issued instructions to the police department to provide certified copies of all available records, documents, evidence and other relevant material related to the incident to the committee before the next meeting.
