PM Shehbaz appoints Ishaq Dar as deputy PM

Surprising as it may seem, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed on Sunday Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar – a close family member and trusted aide of the Sharif family – as deputy prime minister of the country with immediate effect while he himself is abroad on a visit. PM Office statement issued from Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh stated that the prime minister has given approval for appointing FM Dar as deputy prime minister. To add insult to injury, Dar is also accompanying the premier in his visit to Saudi Arabia. No reason has been given why Dar has suddenly been made the deputy PM while they both are abroad. The decision, however, once again shows that key positions are continued to be held among the close aides of the Sharif family. Apart from being the foreign minister, Dar is currently the leader of the House in Senate, which refers to the prime minister or a member appointed by him to represent government and regulate government business in the upper house of the Parliament. Before the general elections, PM Shehbaz had appointed Senator Dar as the chairman of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) election cell.
