Xmas, New Year security plan unveiled

The police, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, have developed an extensive security plan for Christmas and New Year celebrations, ensuring safety across 159 churches and several public spaces in the city. Twelve churches, three tourist locations (including Murree), and two parks have been declared highly sensitive. The security measures will remain in effect from Christmas Eve until New Year's night. The 159 churches have been divided into three categories based on sensitivity, with 12 churches placed in the highly sensitive Category A. These churches will have a three-tier security system, including rooftop snipers, elite commandos at entry and exit points, and barbed wire-sealed entrances. Walk-through gates and comprehensive screening processes will be employed for all attendees, including women and children. Around 2,800 armed police personnel will be deployed, with senior officers making unannounced inspections to ensure preparedness. Parking arrangements for churchgoers will be made 100 feet away from sensitive locations, and nearby roads will be secured. A central control room at the City Police Officer (CPO) office will oversee security arrangements, with senior officials monitoring live feeds from CCTV cameras installed at highly sensitive locations. Police mobile and CCTV-equipped vehicles will also patrol these areas. The police have banned one-wheeling, car skating, and disruptive activities. Fireworks displays for New Year's Eve will require prior approval from local authorities, and strict action will be taken against aerial firing and unauthorised use of firecrackers. All rescue and emergency services, including Rescue 1122 and Civil Defence, will remain on high alert during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
