There was an excitement in anticipation of an accountability court's verdict in the £190m case which was scheduled to be unveiled today (Monday). However, the court has deferred the unveiling and will announce a new date for it today at its seat in Islamabad's judicial complex. Former prime minister Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi are among the key accused in the reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) last year. At the last hearing of the case inside Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail where Imran Khan has been detained for over one year, Islamabad Accountability Court-I Judge Nasir Javed Rana on December 18 reserved his order to be announced on December 23 (today). However, on Sunday, a day before the scheduled hearing, the court staff informed lawyers of the accused via telephone that the court will now convene in Islamabad on Monday to announce the next date for issuance of the verdict. In December 2023, NAB filed a corruption reference against Imran and seven others, including his wife, in connection with the Al-Qadir University. At the last hearing, Barrister Salman Safdar, counsel for the couple, argued that the case was one of "political revenge", adding that the defence had been proved innocent in previous cases. He said the case was one in which the matter involved PML-N President Nawaz Sharif's son, Hassan Nawaz, as well and yet the latter was not included in proceedings. "The reference was made to target a specific couple. Before becoming the prime minister, the PTI founder was known as a social worker, collecting donations worth billions of rupees," he said.
