LAHORE: In a major step towards improving fire safety and emergency preparedness, water and sanitation agencies (Wasas) across Punjab have installed 696 fire hydrants in 41 districts within a period of three months, according to official sources.
The plan to install fire hydrants launched following the devastating fire incident at Karachi’s Gul Plaza, which highlighted the need for better on-ground firefighting infrastructure. In response, the Punjab government ordered the installation of fire hydrants at key commercial centres and densely populated areas to enable rapid response during emergencies.
According to the plan, more than 1,150 fire hydrants are to be installed across the province. While Wasas have completed their part by installing 696 hydrants, the remaining installations will be carried out by the Local Government Department. Officials said the hydrants had been strategically placed in major markets and high-risk locations to facilitate timely firefighting operations.
Rescue 1122 will be responsible for operating the hydrants during emergencies.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen urban safety infrastructure and reduce risks associated with fire emergencies in major cities and towns across Punjab. To ensure operational readiness, mock exercises have also been conducted in collaboration with Rescue 1122 across 41 districts, enabling teams to respond effectively in case of fire incidents.
