BOTH the Israeli military and far-right citizens of the Zionist state have been involved in appalling hate crimes against Christians in Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian territories. Yet the reaction from the culturally Christian but officially secular Western states has been mostly muted, revealing that when it comes to protecting Israel, even their commitment to religious freedom can be sacrificed. A video has emerged of a shocking assault on a French nun by a Jewish man in occupied East Jerusalem. The attacker shoves the nun to the ground and later kicks her. The suspect has been described as ‘mentally ill’. In similar developments, Israeli soldiers were filmed desecrating statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary in separate incidents in Lebanon, while a Greek Catholic convent in the Lebanese village of Yaroun was demolished by the Zionist military. A monitoring group says that last year there were over 113 attacks on church property and Christians in Israel and held Jerusalem, including physical assaults. Meanwhile, in Gaza, Israel has desecrated hundreds of mosques and at least three churches. A UN commission has said that Israel’s attacks on “educational, religious and cultural sites” in occupied Palestine amount to war crimes.

While the Israeli state has issued condemnations of some of these attacks — though not those in Gaza — these appear disingenuous, as it has, at the same time, given free rein to far-right Jewish extremists to terrorise Palestinian Christians and Muslims. Some Western states have issued milquetoast critiques of these barbaric attacks. But some of Israel’s strongest foreign supporters — such as American evangelicals — have been largely muted in their criticism of Tel Aviv’s attacks on Palestinian and Lebanese Christians. The international community must clearly condemn these awful hate crimes, and Christians, as well as followers of other faiths, in Palestine and Lebanon must be protected from Zionist extremism and the terror of the IDF.
