Flotilla abuse

THE testimonies that have emerged from international activists, who were part of a Gaza-bound flotilla, paint a consistent and troubling picture of abuse in Israeli custody. Activists released by Israel have described treatment that has forced governments across Europe to respond. An Italian economist said he was stripped, thrown to the ground, kicked and tasered. Others have reported sexual assault and denial of legal counsel. Flotilla organisers say at least 15 activists reported sexual violence, including rape. An Australian doctor described the treatment as worse than that of animals. French activists returned with broken ribs. Germany has confirmed injuries to its citizens and called some allegations “serious”. Italian prosecutors are investigating possible crimes including kidnapping, torture and sexual assault.

Israel’s prison service has denied the allegations; in fact, this is the same state that has for years been subjecting Gaza to collective punishment, and which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians since October 2023. Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir even posted a video mocking detained activists pinned to the ground — a provocation so blatant it has prompted discussion of sanctions against him within the EU. The accounts emerging now point to a system of abuse operating with impunity because it has long been allowed to do so. What has changed is who the victims are. When Palestinians are brutalised in Israeli detention, the world too often looks away. When European and Australian citizens return home injured and allege sexual violence, governments are compelled to react. That disparity is itself an indictment of the international response throughout this crisis. Palestinians have endured this treatment and far worse for years, with no accountability for the perpetrators. The hope is that diplomatic pressure, legal proceedings and international scrutiny will finally lead to action against Israel, not only for its abuses against the activists, but also for what it has been doing to the Palestinians for years.
