Deadly car bomb in Syria kills 15, injures another 15

A car bomb explosion in the northern Syrian city of Manbij on Monday killed at least 15 people, marking the deadliest attack in the country since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December. This attack is the second bombing in three days and comes amid increasing violence in the region. The victims, identified by the civil defense rescue service, included 14 women and one man, with 15 additional women reported injured. The victims were mostly agricultural workers. Local authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue. There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the bombing, which occurred about 30 kilometers from the Turkish border. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) swiftly condemned the attack, accusing Turkey-backed factions of using such bombings to intimidate local residents. Manbij, a city that has changed hands multiple times throughout Syria's ongoing civil war, was last captured by Turkey-backed groups in December from the SDF, which had previously seized it from the Islamic State in 2016. This attack follows another bombing on Saturday in which four civilians were killed and nine others, including children, were injured, according to the Syrian state news agency SANA. Since December 8, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group has gained control over much of the country, with its leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, declared Syria’s transitional president last week.
