Murder suspect gunned down on court premises

A suspect in an attempted murder case was shot dead inside the district court premises, while his mother sustained gunshot injuries in the attack. The assailants managed to escape, causing chaos among lawyers and citizens. This marks the second broad daylight killing within two weeks in the court premises. Police said the deceased, Shehbaz, was under police custody when unidentified gunmen opened fire near the civil court's corridor. His mother, Salma Parveen, who had come to meet him, was also injured in the attack. Both victims were rushed to Allied Hospital, where Shehbaz succumbed to his injuries. The attack took place at around 2:30 PM when police were escorting Shehbaz and other suspects back to Bakhshi Khana after their hearing before Civil Judge Muhammad Asif. The suspects were arrested in case number 3168/24, registered under sections 324, 109, 148 and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). They were previously held at the district jail and were transferred to court under police supervision. Senior police officials, including SSP Investigation Rana Abdul Wahab, SP Lyallpur Town Rana Rehman Qadir, and SHO Kotwali Umar Cheema, arrived at the scene to assess the situation and collect evidence. The deceased's body was shifted to the mortuary for autopsy, while police initiated a search operation to apprehend the attackers. Regional Police Officer (RPO) Dr Muhammad Abid Khan took notice of the security lapse and sought an immediate report from the acting City Police Officer (CPO).
