US aid freeze

The decision by US President Donald Trump to freeze almost all foreign aid is sparking humanitarian emergencies around the globe that could affect millions of vulnerable individuals. The move, ostensibly part of a sweeping review of US foreign assistance, neglects the real human consequences of cutting off vital support to those in need. According to the United Nations, roughly 1.7 million people in Pakistan, including 1.2 million Afghan refugees, face severe setbacks as they lose access to critical health services and other foreign-funded programmes that receive significant direct or indirect US support. The aid cuts have been almost universally derided as they are sure to cause pain and suffering throughout the world, while also eroding the US reputation around the world. Several academics and US government officials have agreed over the years that USAID is probably the best and most successful foreign policy initiative in the history of the US. Even in countries ravaged by US invasions, USAID has served to rehabilitate the country's image. In Pakistan, USAID has funded projects in almost every economic and social sector. In some areas, USAID had invested more in essential infrastructure than our own government. But with the snap of a finger, Trump has closed over 60 health facilities in Pakistan and also pulled the plug on several other US-backed programmes. We would normally say that the US administration has a responsibility to review its foreign aid policies and consider their humanitarian implications. But it would be futile to expect humanity from a government led by a man who casually calls for ethnic cleansing of Gaza. As for whose fault this turn of events is, we should not 'blame' Trump alone. Over 77 million Americans voted for Trump. Millions of Muslims around the world cheered his win, convincing themselves that he would be good for Palestine. And even now, no elected Republicans have outright condemned his proposal to have US troops commit war crimes. Trump 1.0 accidentally hired a few decent men who stood up to him and neutered his worst decisions. Trump 2.0 faces no such obstacles.
