An alliance of opposition parties has announced hosting a "grand conference" to remedy the problem of terrorism, which has reared its ugly head with an increasing frequency in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces in recent months. On Friday, leaders of the Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Ain-e-Pakistan addressed a press conference in Islamabad calling for evolving national consensus on the issue of terrorism. Speaking on the occasion, the head of the alliance, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, said the government formed on the basis of a rigged election was incapable of addressing the crisis. "As head of the opposition alliance, I urge the people at the helm to step down. There is a need for holding a conference of all stakeholders," he said. He said the "rigged elections" of Feb 2024 and the government on its basis were responsible for the current situation. "The only remedy to the crisis is an APC [all parties conference]." Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the nominal chief of the PTI, condemned the March 11 hijacking of Jaffar Express by terrorists, adding that security forces averted another APS attack like tragedy by taking swift action for rescuing the hostages. He lamented that the PTI was being criticized over its alleged stance on the attack just on the basis of some shady social media posts. SIC chief Hamid Raza said there was anarchy in the country in the 24 hours following the attack. He asked as to who was responsible for that anarchy. "Was it the minister for defense [Khawaja Asif] or someone else?" he asked. He said dialogue was the only way out and therefore the opposition had decided to host a "grand conference". He said the opposition wants to ensure the territorial integrity of the country and wants to see it progress. "This is also the wish of [PTI founder] Imran Khan," he added. PTI leader Asad Qaiser said the Jaffar Express incident was a security lapse. "If you had the moral courage, you would accept this fact," he added.
