Eidul Fitr 2025 being celebrated on March 31; Suparco explains why

Pakistan is expected to observe Eidul Fitr on March 31, 2025, as per a scientific moon sighting forecast released by Suparco. In a statement, the Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) provided an astronomical analysis of the Shawwal crescent’s visibility, indicating that the moon will likely be sighted on March 30 across the country. According to Suparco, the new moon for Shawwal 1446 Hijri will form on March 29 at 3:58 PM (Pakistan Standard Time). However, its visibility on the same evening is unlikely due to its young age and positioning. By March 30 (29th Ramadan in Pakistan), the crescent’s age will be approximately 27 hours, making it easily visible to the naked eye after sunset. Additional astronomical factors, such as the moon’s 14-degree altitude at sunset and 2% illumination, further support the likelihood of sighting. The visibility of the crescent depends on atmospheric conditions, and clear skies would enhance the chances of sighting the moon across most regions of Pakistan. The statement also highlighted that in Saudi Arabia, the chances of moon sighting on March 29 remain minimal due to the moon’s younger age and lower altitude at sunset. This means the moon will likely be visible on March 30 in Saudi Arabia as well, suggesting that Pakistan and much of the Middle East could celebrate Eid on the same day—March 31. Despite Suparco’s scientific forecast, the final decision on Eid ul-Fitr will be made by Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The committee will meet on March 30 to evaluate moon sighting reports from across the country, considering both scientific data and eyewitness testimonies before making an official announcement. "While scientific models strongly indicate a clear sighting on March 30, the final decision remains dependent on ground observations and the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee's official verdict," a Suparco spokesperson said. Pakistan follows both scientific and traditional moon sighting methods, and the government has often relied on Suparco’s lunar calculations to aid the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee's decision-making. If the crescent is sighted as predicted, Ramadan will conclude with 29 fasts, and Eid ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Monday, March 31, 2025.
