Kristi Noem’s bag stolen in D.C., containing security badge, passport, and $3,000 in cash

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s handbag was stolen in D.C. on Easter, losing her badge, passport, and $3K. The incident was confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security on Monday, April 21, 2025. According to reports, the stolen bag also contained Noem’s apartment keys, prescription medication, and blank checks. Noem, who previously served as governor of South Dakota and is now a member of the Trump administration, acknowledged the theft publicly during the White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday morning. In an email statement, the department explained, “Her entire family was in town including her children and grandchildren. She was using the cash withdrawal to treat her family to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts.” While the Metropolitan Police Department referred inquiries to the Secret Service, the agency in turn redirected questions back to Homeland Security. No suspects or arrests have been reported as of now. Noem has often drawn national attention for her controversial public appearances and social media activity. Just weeks prior, she was seen wearing a Rolex watch and ICE-branded gear during a visit to a Salvadoran prison. As head of the Department of Homeland Security, Noem oversees critical national operations, including border control, counter-terrorism, and cybersecurity. The department also manages FEMA, the Coast Guard, and the Secret Service—ironically, the agency now involved in the investigation of her stolen property. The theft raises concerns about security protocols for high-ranking officials and how sensitive materials are handled in public settings.
