Lawyer booked for backing Mahrang Baloch online

A case has been registered against lawyer Jalila Haider at the Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) Cyber Crime Reporting Centre in Islamabad for allegedly supporting Mahrang Baloch, chief organiser of the Baloch Yekjehti Committee (BYC), on social media. According to details, the case was filed under Sections 9, 10, and 26-A of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 on behalf of the state. Islamabad Cyber Crime Reporting Centre Technical Assistant Aneesur Rehman is the complainant in the case. The complaint states that Mahrang Baloch is listed under the Fourth Schedule under the Anti-Terrorism Act by the Balochistan Home Department. During the inquiry, it was found that Jalila Haider allegedly shared content in support of Mahrang Baloch intentionally, an act that, according to the complaint, could spread unrest and anxiety among the public and within society. Subsequently, a formal case was registered, and an investigation has been initiated. On Friday, Mahrang and other leaders of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee began a hunger strike to protest the alleged "torture" of detainees by prison staff and the transfer of activist Beebow Baloch to District Jail Pishin. Mahrang and several BYC activists had been arrested on March 22, accused of attacking Quetta Civil Hospital and inciting violence, following a police crackdown on their protest against alleged enforced disappearances in Quetta. Her detention under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance sparked widespread condemnation from Baloch rights advocates and international human rights organisations.
