Amal Clooney, the prominent British human rights lawyer and wife of actor George Clooney, could face a travel ban to the United States following an executive order issued by President Donald Trump. The sanctions are tied to her involvement with the International Criminal Court (ICC), which Trump has criticized for its investigation into war crimes related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. In May 2024, Clooney served on a panel for ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan, which concluded that there were reasonable grounds to pursue charges against several Hamas leaders and Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. The panel's report identified war crimes and crimes against humanity, such as hostage-taking, murder, and sexual violence, committed by both sides in the conflict. Trump’s executive order, signed on February 6, 2025, imposes sanctions on the ICC, which Trump claims has no legitimate authority over the United States or Israel. The order specifically targets those involved in ICC investigations regarding Israel, arguing that the court is undermining US sovereignty and endangering its personnel. According to reports from Reuters, several senior lawyers involved in the case have received warnings, although it remains unclear whether Clooney was directly contacted. The sanctions could result in a travel ban to the US and the freezing of assets for individuals linked to the ICC's investigation. The Trump administration has stated that the ICC’s actions against the US and Israel pose a threat to national security and foreign policy. As of now, Clooney has not commented on the matter, and the extent of her involvement in the ICC’s investigation is still unclear.
