Wapda records over 6,000MW of hydropower generation during peak hours

LAHORE: The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) said on Monday that it recorded more than 6,000 megawatts of hydel power generation on Sunday night following an increase in the release of water from reservoirs by the Indus River System Authority (Irsa).

“With increased indent by Irsa, Wapda’s … hydel power stations provided 6,118MW to national grid during peak hours,” the authority said in a statement.

Sharing a breakdown, it said the Tarbela Hydel Power Station contributed 2,332MW to the national grid, Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project 1,095MW, Ghazi Barotha 1,160MW, Mangla 930MW, Warsak 135MW and Chashma 101MW.

The remining 365MW electricity was generated by Wapda’s other medium and small hydel power stations, it added.

According to Wapda, in 2025, its 22 hydel power stations generated 33.12 billion units of electricity, which it said was about 30 per cent of the total electricity generated in the system.

In 2023-24 fiscal year, Wapda’s power stations cumulatively provided 34.436 billion units of electricity to the national grid, which was 3.266bn units more than the last fiscal.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, the total hydel generation capacity of Wapda’ s hydropower projects is 9,459MW.
