In the latest edition of its ‘State of Play’ broadcast on Tuesday, PlayStation unveiled some intriguing new offerings, as well as expanded gameplay and release dates for games already on the radar. Some of the standouts include the reveal of God of War: Laufey — a spin-off featuring protagonist Kratos’ wife Faye — and a blood-soaked demo of Marvel’s Wolverine.
Here’s a list of titles that really piqued my interest, and feel free to tell us what you’re excited for in the comments!
The first offering was an extended gameplay demonstration of Marvel’s Wolverine, due this autumn. Visually, this build of the game looks absolutely superb, with plenty of details on Wolverine’s suit and in the environment.
Combat showed off the game’s destructible environments and gore system, while reminding me of the brutal moves from 2018’s God of War reboot, and adding the character’s iconic lunge to target enemies from a distance.
This year has been good for single-player story-driven adventures, and Wolverine (hopefully) follows the trend. It looks visceral, it looks dark, and it’s fitting for such an icon.
Warning: contains blood and gore, watch at your own risk.
Now for something that really piqued my interest. Kemuri is an action title that follows ‘yokai hunters’, individuals who deal with monsters from Japanese folklore and other paranormal threats. And it looks beautiful.
The hyper-stylised visuals, coupled with a cyberpunk-like city, create a cool environment to play in, which is populated with characters and creatures with a pretty unique-looking design. The combat looks fun too, with flashy, over-the-top moves and vibrant visual effects.
It’ll be out next year, but I’m looking forward to seeing more.
Project ACES unveiled new footage of the upcoming Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, the latest entry in the longstanding arcade flight game. A fresh trailer shows more footage of highly detailed aircraft and the series’ signature superweapons, such as a “land battleship”.
AC games are extremely simple and fun — fly a plane and blow things up. The gameplay reminds me of the last entry in the series, Skies Unknown, which had amazing flight gameplay and mission design. But this game seems to be giving more screen time and presence to your wingmen, with a fully rendered crew of characters.
Additionally, a port of Ace Combat 0: The Belkan War has been announced as a pre-order bonus for AC8, but I couldn’t find confirmation on whether it will be available for standalone purchase. This dampened the package for me slightly, as it brought back memories of Activision locking a beloved classic behind a pre-order for another game. Still, I’m hopeful AC8 will be a solid game, and I’m preparing for takeoff in October.
Sony’s Santa Monica studio closed out the show by unveiling God of War: Laufey, due to release next year. This new entry in the franchise takes the focus away from series icon Kratos and places it on his late wife, Faye. Immediately, the 23-minute demo raised a lot of questions, mostly about how the game would be with a different protagonist.
It also showed what looked like an afterlife for godly figures, containing deities and creatures from every mythological pantheon, such as the Egyptian goddess of war, Sekhmet. There is also a talking cube and a set of talking ribbons that act as Faye’s companions. Yes, you read that correctly.
The series’ signature one-take cinematography makes a return with stunning visuals and superb-looking combat. Building on the system presented in 2018, it looks less brutish and more graceful — a sort of blend of martial arts and ballet — showing the difference between Faye and Kratos as warriors. We see Faye literally knock out a guy’s soul and then fight the soul. Sign. Me. Up.
