DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Seven people were killed and eight others received injuries when heavy rain coupled with windstorm lashed Dera Ismail Khan, Orakzai and Bajaur districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday.
The windstorm, which struck Paharpur city and surrounding villages of Dera Ismail Khan, and torrential rain caused collapse of roofs and walls of several houses and shops. Rescue teams and locals launched relief activities to retrieve victims from rubble before shifting the injured to nearby hospitals.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Kamran, a resident of Paharpur; Bahawal, a resident of Chah Dyal Bagwani; and two women from Zandar village. An injured was identified as Ahmad Ali while identities of the remaining were yet to be officially confirmed.
The powerful winds uprooted numerous trees across the tehsil while solar panels installed on houses and commercial buildings were ripped off and blown away. In one suburban locality, the collapse of boundary wall and the roof of a livestock shelter killed several animals.
Roofs and walls collapse while power supply remains suspended in many areas
The windstorm also damaged electricity distribution network, bringing down several power poles and disrupting supply of electricity to many parts of Paharpur and its adjoining areas. Restoration work could not begin immediately because of hazardous conditions and damage to infrastructure.
The assistant commissioner of Paharpur, Shahab Ahmed Marwat, visited the affected areas to assess the damage and oversee relief activities. He directed relevant departments to expedite rescue operations and prepare a report on losses caused by the storm to locals.
Officials said that district administration and rescue teams remained engaged in clearing roads blocked by uprooted trees, restoring essential services and assisting affected families.
The storm was one of the most destructive weather events to hit Paharpur this season, highlighting the vulnerability of southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to severe pre-monsoon weather, which frequently brings strong winds, heavy rain and damage to public infrastructure and private property.
In Orakzai tribal district, three persons were killed and four others were injured by lightning on Thursday.
A Rescue 1122 official told Dawn the incident took place in Sam Ferozkhel area of lower Orakzai and left three dead and four others injured. The injured were shifted to tehsil headquarters hospital Kalaya for treatment.
In Bajaur tribal district, the weather turned pleasant after rain on Thursday. However, the accompanying windstorm disrupted power supply and brought down boundary wall of a government primary school in War Mamund tehsil of the tribal district.
Locals said that moderate rain began around 5pm and was reported across the district, with Lowi Mamund and most parts of Khar tehsil receiving the heaviest showers.
“The rain has not only made the weather, which had become very hot, very pleasant in our areas, it will also benefit vegetable crops,” said Dilawar Khan of Laghari in Lowi Mamund and Ihsan Khan of Haji Lawang in Khar tehsil.
According to reports, windstorm accompanying the rain toppled the boundary wall of a government girls’ primary school in Lowi Kharki area of War Mamund tehsil.
No casualties were reported as the school was closed at the time of incident.
Residents of the area told Dawn that windstorm also caused suspension of power supply to many parts of the district, which remained cut off till filing of this report on Thursday evening.
