Balochistan govt, opposition agree on austerity measures

 



QUETTA: Opposition parties and coalition partners of the PPP-led government in Balochistan have reached a consensus on implementing joint austerity measures to address the challenges facing the province.

The consensus was reached during a consultative meeting of coalition partners, parliamentary leaders and opposition members of the Balochistan Assembly. The meeting, presided over by Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, addressed the overall prevailing situation and other issues.

Bugti briefed the attendees on steps the government has taken and took the coalition partners into confidence regarding the practical enforcement of cost-cutting measures, according to a statement.

The measures are being implemented under the guidance of the federal government.

Steps include reducing fuel use, unnecessary expenses to protect public funds; CM Bugti hails agreement as sign of ‘collective responsibility’

“The consensus among all parties reflects seriousness and collective responsibility towards the current situation,” Bugti said.

The chief minister emphasised the wise use of petroleum products, the reduction of unnecessary expenditures and the protection of public funds. The agreement calls for adopting effective and coordinated steps to address challenges, ensure economic stability and provide relief to the poor.

“A workable and effective strategy is also being adopted at the provincial level to counter the emerging challenges,” he added.

CM Bugti stated that substantial measures are being proposed to provide relief to the poor amid rising inflation, and their implementation will be ensured with transparency and accountability.

The meeting was attended by provincial leaders of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), National Party, Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League (PML), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) and Jamaat-e-Islami. Some members participated via video link.

Senior government officials, including the Chief Secretary of Balochistan, also attended and briefed participants on the austerity initiatives.
