WHILE most of the world’s attention is fixated on the Gulf, where the US-Israeli war on Iran continues, another destructive conflict is underway in the region: the brutal Israeli war on Lebanon. The most recent hostilities began when pro-Iran Lebanese armed group Hezbollah started striking Israel on March 2. However, the truth is that the Zionist state had been violating Lebanese sovereignty repeatedly since the November 2024 ceasefire. The UN has listed thousands of Israeli truce violations. Simply put, Lebanon was a volcano waiting to erupt, thanks to Tel Aviv’s provocative behaviour and penchant for aggression. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a dire warning, saying that the “Gaza model must not be replicated in Lebanon”. The UN chief probably realises that Israel has no qualms about unleashing barbaric violence in Lebanon, just as it did in the occupied Palestinian territory. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has also compared Israeli attacks on Lebanon to those carried out by the Zionist state in Gaza.
The war with Iran, and the issue of Hezbollah’s arms, are just excuses; Israel has been violating Lebanese sovereignty much before Hezbollah came into existence. In fact, it was the pro-Iran group that evicted Israel from Lebanese territory in 2000. But now, Israel has again set its sights on the Arab nation’s land. The extremist Israeli finance minister has said that the “new border” must be up to the Litani River — deep inside Lebanese territory. This is not surprising; after all, occupying other people’s land and ethnically cleansing native populations is not an alien concept in Zionism. The world must act now to end the brutal Israeli war on Lebanon. Nearly 1,000 Lebanese have been killed, while a million are displaced. The Lebanese state has said it wants direct talks with Israel. But Beirut must realise that if they negotiate under fire, and give the Israelis an inch, the Zionists will end up taking a mile. The Lebanese state should do more to defend its territory from Israeli aggression. The fact is that Israel, with America underwriting it, is the biggest security threat in the Middle East. It slaughters innocents and occupies the territory of others with impunity. For long-term peace in the region, Israel’s criminal behaviour must be checked, and Tel Aviv must be shunned by the world community until it changes its ways.
