Sindh Assembly calls for end to gas loadshedding during Ramazan

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Tuesday demonstrated both cooperation and contention on its private members day, as it unanimously passed two key resolutions, one calling for no gas loadshedding during Sehr and Iftar in Ramazan, while rejecting four others from the opposition.

Speaking on the resolution, tabled by Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Sumeta Afzal Syed, Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly Ali Khurshidi said that the assembly had already passed seven resolutions on the gas issue, and now it was time to implement them.

“What is the provincial government doing?” he asked.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon responded that the matter had been discussed earlier, but today’s resolution specifically concerned the month of Ramazan. “We have already written to the federal government, he said.

He added that while there was some relief in cities, there was “no electricity or gas” in rural areas.

The other unanimously adopted resolution was moved by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan lawmaker Muhammad Mazahir Amir, seeking to increase the insurance amount for accident victims from Rs100,000 to Rs500,000.

The senior minister said that the government was not opposing the opposition member’s resolution, calling it a positive initiative.

The MQM-P highlighted the provincial government’s universal insurance scheme and urged a review to raise the compensation to Rs500,000, a move also endorsed in principle by Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani.

However, the assembly rejected two resolutions of the opposition members.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Parliamentary Leader Shabbir Qureshi, in his resolution, proposed a 14-year relaxation in the age limit for government jobs in Sindh.

However, Labour Minister Saeed Ghani opposed the resolution, stating that a court decision already existed on the matter and the provincial government could not extend the age limit.

Another resolution by MQM-P’s Aamir Siddiqui, seeking financial assistance for market owners unable to install fire safety equipment, was also rejected.

The senior minister said that the provincial government had already initiated fire safety measures and building audits, with hundreds of buildings audited and work ongoing in collaboration with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce.

A private motion by MQM-P’s Qurrat-ul-Ain demanding the establishment of Bachat Bazaars (discount markets) during Ramazan was also voted out.

Opposing the motion, the senior minister said that the provincial government had already set up such markets annually across the province.

The House also rejected the resolution of MQM-P lawmaker Najam Mirza, who sought effective administrative, institutional and awarenessbased measures to ensure universal birth registration in Sindh, guaranteeing legal identity for every child.

During Question Hour, Parliamentary Secretary Heer Soho briefed the house on public-private partnership projects, including collaborations with China.

The sitting was adjourned till Friday.
