LARKANA: The Sindh government on Saturday lashed out at its opponents, in particular the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F), for continuously ‘targeting’ the PPP.
The government’s reaction came amid PML-F’s recent proactive political moves in different parts of Sindh to strengthen its support base.
Sindh government’s spokesman Buland Khan Junejo held at a news conference in the local press club on Saturday, and said that certain political groups are out to target the PPP leadership.
He criticised the PML-F, stating that during the 2022 floods, PPP’s entire leadership was in the fieled to help the affected families while the opposition parties stepped aside. He also accused the PML-F of supporting the controversial Kalabagh dam project and siding with dictators. The PPP stood with the people in resistance, he said, and recalled that Benazir Bhutto had then staged a sit-in at Kamoon Shaheed against the project.
“During the PTI government, Functional League was also part of the conspiracy to construct canals in Sindh, while PPP opposed it,” added Mr Junejo. He noted that electoral alliances used to be formed against PPP before every election, but the people of Sindh had stood unshaken with PPP. “The opposition will face an even greater defeat than before, and PPP will break the troika,” he asserted. The spokesman said that under President Asif Ali Zardari’s leadership, Pakistan secured $2 billion in flood relief funds and launched the world’s largest housing project, with one million homes already completed.
He also cited the Benazir Income Support Programme as a landmark initiative for the social protection of millions of women.
The spokesperson said the Sindh government has established major health institutions like the Sindh Institute of Cardio-Vascular Diseases (SICVD), Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), and Sindh Integrated Emergency & Health Services (SIEH). Besides, a 600-bed hospital is currently under construction in Larkana.
He also noted the recent distribution of scooties to female students workers in Sukkur, after Karachi and Hyderabad. The expansion of Peoples Bus Service from Karachi and Larkana all the way to Sukkur and Shikarpur is also underway.
Mr Junejo said the Sindh government provided financial relief to the general public on transport despite rising fuel prices, and also extended a subsidy of Rs50 billion to farmers for wheat production.
He said that “PPP leadership shares a long and deep bond with Pakistan and Sindh — a legacy stretching from Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari”.
The press conference revolved around the achievements of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who, he said, made the country a nuclear power, and Benazir Bhutto, who empowered women and further strengthened country’s defence with missile technology.
He said that Bhutto had gifted the country with democracy and the right to vote.
