Arab states meet today to discuss Palestinians' future and possibly reject Trump’s Gaza proposal

Senior officials from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE will meet in Riyadh on Thursday to discuss a counterproposal to President Donald Trump's oppressive idea of forcibly relocating two million Gazans to neighbouring Egypt and Jordan. This meeting marks an important moment in Arab diplomatic efforts to protect Palestinian rights and sovereignty. The summit comes ahead of a crucial Arab League gathering in Cairo on March 4, where these nations will present a unified plan for Gaza's future, prioritizing Palestinian-led solutions that reject any notion of forced displacement. Trump's Gaza proposal has provoked outrage across the international community, with the Arab world standing in rare unity against the idea. For Palestinians, the suggestion evokes painful memories of the 1948 "Nakba" when hundreds of thousands were displaced during Israel’s creation. As part of their efforts, Egypt is reportedly preparing a three-phase reconstruction plan for Gaza, which focuses on rebuilding the region’s vital infrastructure. The second phase will focus on rebuilding Gaza’s utilities, while the final phase will involve urban planning, housing construction, and provision of social services. While the plan is promising, the key challenge remains securing financing, with Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and the UAE signaling that they would need reassurances on Hamas' role in Gaza's future. Egypt’s proposal also includes a new governance structure for Gaza, led by a Palestinian administration that is not aligned with any specific faction. This plan envisions a security apparatus that combines Palestinian Authority-affiliated forces, Egyptian troops, and Arab security forces. However, this plan still faces differences among Arab states, with Egypt and Saudi Arabia aiming for the Palestinian Authority to take control, while Qatar insists that the people of Gaza must have the ultimate say in their future. As today’s meeting in Riyadh progresses, Arab leaders will work toward a more comprehensive, unified strategy that rejects any form of forced displacement and instead champions Palestinian leadership in Gaza’s recovery and political future.
