A small plane contracted by the American military crashed on Thursday in the southern Philippines, killing at least four people on board. The crash took place on Mindanao Island, near the municipality of Ampatuan. The US Embassy confirmed the plane was contracted by the American military, but provided no further details about the incident. The Philippine military issued a statement confirming the crash, but said the matter was classified, and they could not release further information while an investigation was ongoing. Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the crash, and regional police have been deployed to the site to prevent tampering with evidence. The victims of the crash have not yet been identified, and police spokesman Jopy Ventura said the plane’s tail number, N349CA, was registered to defense firm Metrea. According to flight-tracking site FlightAware, the aircraft was a Beechcraft Super King Air B300. Metrea, the company behind the plane, is known as a provider of services to national security partners in various mission areas. The crash occurred on a farm, and municipal rescuer Rhea Martin reported that four bodies were found near the wreckage. She described the plane as being “cut in half” upon impact. The crash comes amid the presence of small numbers of US troops in the Philippines on short-term rotational deployments. The US military has assisted Philippine forces in combating militant groups linked to the Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group that remain active in the region. The cause of the crash and details surrounding the mission are under investigation, and the US Indo-Pacific Command did not immediately respond to inquiries. Authorities in the Philippines continue to investigate, and the situation remains under close scrutiny as both US and Philippine officials work together to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
