Raid on tyre market ignites protests

Shopkeepers' protest against the customs raid on the tyre market at the old vegetable market has ended. The protesters have dispersed, and traffic flow on University Road has been restored. SHO PIB Ishaq Mughal stated that the customs authorities conducted the raid based on information regarding the presence of smuggled tyres. In reaction to the raid, the tyre market shopkeepers gathered and burned tyres on the road to Hassan Square against what they called unjustified raids by customs officials on the market. The protest suspended traffic on both sides of the road, causing long queues of vehicles in nearby areas. The traffic police diverted vehicles to alternative routes from Newtown to Liaquat National Hospital.
