Thar's diverse culture celebrated at SAU

The Second Thar Traditional and Cultural Festival was held at Sindh Agricultural University (SAU) in Tandojam. During the festival, experts presented recommendations for promoting tourism in Thar. They suggested establishing cultural centers with local participation to preserve Thar's cultural heritage, managing rainwater storage, protecting wildlife. They also proposed conducting agricultural and environmental research through universities, and empowering Thari women through handicrafts and small businesses. The festival was organized and hosted by Sindh Agricultural University through support of Thar Students Council. SAU Vice Chancellor Dr Altaf Ali Siyal said that Thar is a beautiful blend of historical narratives, heritage, culture, and fine arts. However, there is a need to focus on Thar's renowned products, agricultural and medicinal plants, and handicrafts. He also stressed the importance of marketing nutritious agricultural and veterinary products from Thar in metropolitan cities. MPA Imdad Ali Pitafi called for promoting rain-fed agriculture in Thar. Former VC Dr Fateh Mari said women of Thar are strong and hardworking. Institutions should play a role in promoting Thari handicrafts and taking organic food products to a commercial level without using chemicals. Renowned social leader Nasir Panhwar said that Thar's climate is changing. Environmentally friendly huts are being replaced with cement structures, and the decline of peacocks is evidence of disruptions in Thar's ecosystem. Social leader Zahida Detho urged promoting tourism in the area and establishing educational institutions and skill development centers to empower women, making development in Thar possible.
