Peshawar is set to expand its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service with the addition of 72 new hybrid diesel buses to meet growing demand and ease congestion in the city. During a meeting chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, it was decided to launch BRT buses on new routes along Ring Road, Bara Road, and Khyber Road, Express News reported. In this regard, 72 new diesel-hybrid buses will be purchased. A six-month deadline has been set for completing the civil works required for the purchase of new buses and operation on these new routes. The progress of the ongoing construction of plazas for the BRT system was also reviewed. A briefing during the meeting revealed that the Mall of Hayatabad and the Dubgari Plaza, which are under construction, will be completed by the end of April. The meeting also addressed important decisions to resolve traffic issues in the provincial capital. These decisions include starting work on the missing link of Ring Road and full funding for the swift completion of the project. To improve traffic flow, underpasses will be constructed at various points in the city. Seven underpasses will be built at various locations on Ring Road and University Road. Relevant authorities have been directed to complete the feasibility studies for these underpasses within two months. A plan to construct underpasses in densely populated areas within the city was also initiated, and it was decided to remove all obstacles affecting traffic flow on University Road within a month. In his address, Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Peshawar and the provision of modern urban facilities. He stated that financial constraints would not be allowed to hinder this progress. He emphasized that the BRT service would be further improved based on public convenience and need. The meeting also decided to introduce BRT-style buses in the province’s divisional headquarters. Initially, feasibility studies will be conducted for four divisional headquarters: Mardan, Swat, Abbottabad, and Dera Ismail Khan.
